Nightcrossings Program Host

I was a Nightcrossings listener long before becoming the host of the show. I remember winter nights when the family would just sit and listen. We would have the kids in bed and a fire going in the fireplace. There’s nothing better than sitting close to the one you love, watching a fire and listening to such soft, calming music. I enjoy hosting Nightcrossings knowing that when listeners tune in they’ll hear music that is specifically chosen to help them have a peaceful evening.

I started listening to Radio Kansas regularly when I was pregnant with my son. Being my first child, I wanted to do everything as best I could. I read a lot of books. It was mentioned frequently that listening to classical music while pregnant could benefit the child, so I listened often, and have continued to since then.

Music was played regularly in our house growing up. I remember us kids having to be careful not to run or jump around the record player so the needle wouldn’t scratch the record. My dad played guitar, and some of my favorite memories while growing up are of him playing music for us kids. I took piano lessons, but was more interested in learning how to play acoustic guitar. My sister continued her piano lessons, and my grandma bought her an electric piano. We filled the house with piano and guitar music. I still remember it being a lot of fun.

One of the most interesting things about hosting the show is getting to know the stories behind the artists and their music. My ancestors came from County Cork, Ireland, so I especially enjoy getting to know the Celtic music in the station’s collection. I find the artists themselves to be an interesting group of people. Many are classically-trained musicians from the most prestigious schools. Some of the self-taught musicians on the show really impress me. The most interesting have roots here in Kansas. It’s nice to see how far they’ve come in their careers.
